How to Freeze a Cake for Easy Shipping

Perishable items like cakes and other food items can be safely shipped as long as proper precautions were observed when packing them for shipping. Some cakes can be frozen before shipping so they remain fresh throughout the whole transportation process. Freezing is also a great way to eliminate the use of dry ice when shipping food items.

However, not all types of cakes and frosting can hold up well to freezing and thawing. Only freeze dense cakes, like a pound or carrot cakes with butter cream frosting or simple glaze, as these retain their form and flavor even after freezing. Here are some tips on how to freeze a cake for easy shipping.

Make sure that your freshly baked cake has completely cooled down. Frost or glaze it as you would normally do. Freeze a cake for easy shipping by placing it in the freezer for 24 hours or until frozen solid.  Also, freeze some gel coolant packs.

Wrap the frozen cake in 2 layers of kitchen cling wrap. Place the cake inside a sturdy cake box for added protection during shipping. The frozen cake should fit snugly into the box and would not shift around.

Get a shipping box and layer the bottom with bubble wrap. Place the cake box on top of the bubble wrap and insert the gel coolant packs on the sides and top. Fill in any spaces in the shipping box with packing peanuts or bubble wrap to prevent any movement.

Lay another layer of bubble wrap on top of the cake box and seal tightly with packing tape. Address and label the package and take to your local shipping company or post office.

Ship the cake through overnight or next-day delivery, Advise the recipient about the incoming shipment so there will be someone to receive it when it arrives.
