Important Considerations when Shipping Exotic Pets

Shipping exotic pets

As the name implies, exotic pets are not your usual domesticated animals, such as cats, dogs, small birds, or fish, that are kept as pets. They are usually rare and require special care and attention. Just like when shipping ordinary pets, there are precautions that must be followed to ensure that your exotic pet arrives alive and in the pinkest of health. Here are some tips to help you when shipping exotic pets.

Make sure that your animal is healthy and can take the stresses associated with traveling.  Visit a veterinarian and have the animal checked up before shipping exotic pets.  Ask the vet for a health certificate stating that the animal is healthy and free from any disease. This certification is a requirement by most pet carriers.

If shipping abroad, make sure that the country you are transporting the animal to allows the entry of such animals in their territory.  Also research on the certifications and other documents that are required when shipping exotic pets to other countries.

Be reminded that reptiles, amphibians, and fish are only accepted as air cargo, not as carry-on or checked baggage. Your exotic pet shipment must comply with the container requirements of the current edition of the IATA Live Animal Regulations.

Reptiles, such as chameleons, frogs, geckos, iguanas, lizards, newts, salamanders, and toads, must be placed in containers made of wood, plastic, or corrugated material.

Insure your pets.  While insurance for exotic animals are not as common as dog or cat insurance, it is still a good idea to look for a company offering such insurance. This will be your protection in case accidents, mishaps or loss occur during the transportation.

Look for a pet carrier with good reputation and have years of experience in transporting animals. Pick a shipping company that will look after your animals and will provide the needed care of them and not just treats them as ordinary packages. Also make sure that the company you are using have all the necessary permits in transporting animals.

If your exotic pet needs special attention, like feeding or administration of medication, make sure to let the carrier know about this.

Make sure that your exotic pet’s crate or container has all the pertinent information about the animal and its destination as well as your name and contact information so that the carrier can get in touch with you in case a problem occurs.
