Packing Tips When Shipping Ceramics

Ceramic dishes, bowls, and vases are fragile items that require proper packing techniques to avoid scratches, chipping, or breakages during shipping. The key is to pack them with layers of packing materials to minimize movement in the box during transit. Here are some practical packing tips when shipping ceramics.

The best way to avoid damages when shipping ceramics is to wrap the fragile pieces with layers of different packing materials. For instance, if you are packing a hollow ceramic item such as a vase or mug, fill it with packing peanuts to keep the inside layered and cushioned. Then, wrap the ceramic piece in tissue paper, and use bubble wrap to add another buffer. Use tape to secure the materials in place.

Depending on the size of your ceramic item, choose an appropriately-sized shipping box that can snugly accommodate the item with a bit of space for more packaging materials such that the fragile ceramic is not in direct contact with the sides of the box. Fill empty spaces between the item and the box with packing peanuts or foam pieces to prevent the contents from moving. Close and seal the box and place inside a larger shipping box. Fill the spaces between the two boxes with more packing materials. Make sure that the smaller box does not shift inside the larger box before sealing the package shut.

When shipping several ceramic items in one package, wrap each one in tissue paper and bubble wrap before stacking them together (if sending plates or bowls). If packing mugs or tumblers, make a divider by crisscrossing pieces of cardboard and placing the items in an individual slot of the divider.  Fill spaces between the items with more packing peanuts to ensure that the items will not move during transit.

Close the shipping box and seal with packing tape. Make sure to secure the bottom flaps of the box with packing tape for extra support. Address and label the package with Handle With Care or Fragile.

Take the package to your local post office of the shipping company. If shipping valuable ceramic items, you may opt to buy insurance to cover the items in case of damage or loss.
